Winter 2024 Leadership Letter

What a year WinSETT had in 2023 and 2024 is shaping up to be spectacular too! The Leadership Program started the year under new leadership with Katherine Sinex taking over as the National Leadership Program Director delivering two semesters of public Skill Builders, private workshops and private Skill Builders throughout the year.

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK!

In 2023, we received funding from the Government of Canada’s Community Services Recovery Fund to Modernize the WinSETT Skill Builders by selecting and implementing a Learning Management System. WinSETT is also undertaking a project focused on Reducing the Isolation of Women in Trades through mentoring, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy.

Our current Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) project, Reducing Systemic Barriers in SETT, is nearing completion. The project will cap off with a final meeting in March and prepared reports for WAGE and WinSETT.

As you can see in this newsletter, WinSETT is launching new branding. Along with the new look, www.winsett.ca is being redeveloped and modernized, with a new website expected in February.

In 2024, WinSETT will work to ensure our professional development materials continue to meet the needs of our community. During the pandemic, we shifted to online delivery in an incredibly short period. Now that we have weathered the COVID storm, we want to circle back to ensure WinSETT materials are current and consistent across topic areas.

2023 brought sponsors! Graham Group headquartered in Saskatchewan approached us to become an organizational sponsor at the start of the year. Later in the year, Cenovus came onboard with a three year sponsorship. As part of the Cenovus agreement, WinSETT is to deliver annual student retreats at a location chosen by Cenovus. The first was delivered at the University of Calgary last fall.

As with all organizations, our team brought in new people during the year: Three new Board members, a new Leadership Program Director, two new Leadership Program facilitators and two Leadership Program hosts.

In closing, thank you to all our team members and supporters for helping WinSETT to continue to strive for our vision of a world where women participate fully in science, engineering, trades and technology.

Have a very happy and prosperous new year.

With Kindest Regards and Gratitude,
Marg Latham
WinSETT Chair
